Most of our learning starts with a book. If you have a book, you have a lesson plan one way or another.
The Gingerbread man is just the right level to challenge Flossy, our five year old with her reading. The recipe, including the measures and method is just the right level of challenge for our six year old as she learns about weights and measures so, of course, some gingerbread had to be made.
The book we had was beautiful and included the little old lady’s recipe. So, once Flossy had read the story, Felicity had sung the song and we had all bemoaned the demise of the gingerbread man we set about with some baking.
Freya read and collected the ingredients and did the majority of the measuring. The other two girls helped with the mixing and pouring. We baked the gingerbread and it was sensational – completely delicious!
As an extension you could rewrite the story by:
- having different animals
- having a different creature being baked
- telling it from the gingerbread man’s perspective etc.
Hope you enjoy the eating as much as the girls did.
