Given Freya’s confidence with partitioning I thought it was worth keeping up the momentum and trying to teach her expanded written method.
In this method, rather than partitioning you complete the calculation by adding the ones (units) and writing down the answer, then adding the tens and writing down that answer below.
Freya was delighted how quickly this meant she could do the calculations!
She made short work of a page of calculations only making errors when using the number line incorrectly (more haste less speed) during the addition computation.
She practiced and practiced and I promised that we would move onto the ‘quick’ method for subtraction tomorrow.
