Hot off the trails of Freya’s success with column addition we tackled column subtraction.
Using the analogy of ‘bags of sweets’ that we open to add to our ones column when we need to ‘borrow’ a ten from the tens column she quickly managed to grasp the expanded method.
As she already understood how to do column addition, We decided to ploughing on in lesson two and introduce standard written method for subtraction.
She quickly grasped the concept and was over the moon at the speed she could now do the previously onerous and challenging calculations.
I even tried to catch her out by giving her a page of mixed addition and subtraction calculations. She only got caught out once! So very proud of her progress 🙂
