Poor Freya.

She really struggles with spelling.

It doesn’t impact on their love of writing yet, which is great, but she isn’t in school at the moment so we can manage her emotions more easily.

She learns all the rules and seems to internalize them, but then misapplies them.

Licke for like

Saterday for Saturday etc.

We have tried word searches, anagrams, writing words out three times, look cover write and check. So many strategies but she still really struggles.

As an avid reader we had hoped that seeing words in print would help. It hasn’t.

Nick has now started a dyslexia visualization tool with her where she memorized words and sees them in her minds eye.

This has helped with some words that don’t follow the rules.

Mnemonics have helped with others:

Big Elephants Can’t Always Use Small Exits

We have now added in a spelling dictionary.

Freya has made it and decorated it and we are putting words into it that she spells incorrectly so she can help herself when writing and maintain her confidence.

Will let you know if it helps her!

  1. Bless her…….know how she feels…….but don’t kill her love of words because of the spellings. It will come!

    1. Couldn’t agree more! It’s a shame that people are judged (particularly children in KS1 SATs) so harshly because of it…. that and handwriting form negative first impressions.
