Hashimoto’s disease – more learning

In January I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease – an autoimmune thyroid disease that effects every part of your body in a variety of ways.

In some ways it was a great relief as it made my very disparate and wide ranging symptoms make sense for the first time in two or more decades. *see list later

In other ways it was a huge blow knowing that life would never be the same again.

The first step was to try to lose weight. With an under active thyroid and multiple elations on my thyroid this is easier said than done.

I have been learning yoga and signed up for a free initial challenge on DoYouYoga which has now become part of my daily routine.

Next I worked on my mental health, working with a GP in Greece I took medication and married this with daily meditation using Headspace a great guided meditation App.

Using Dr Izabella Wentz as my thyroid mentor I worked through the Documentary Series ‘The Thyroid Secret’ and learnt how diet can impact on thyroid health.

I became vegan (although the Autoimmune Protocol actually recommends meat my osteoarthritis diagnosis makes meat eating a no go) and have started an elimination diet.

It has been a tough year… in so many ways… but my health finally seems to be improving. I’ve lost about 7kg and 30cm around my body and have some meal plans that eliminate all inflammatory foods and are vegan too.

So, a new way of life has begun… learning every day and investing in my health is a priority…. finally!

* my symptoms included:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Hair loss
  • Infertility
  • Joint pain
  • Swelling
  • Bloating
  • Food intolerances
  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings and many more…
